After leaving Carpentras, you'll follow the pleasant D938 which gives
some lovely views of the countryside around the Dentelles de Montmirail
and Mont Ventoux. Then you'll take the little D21 on your left, lined
with vine fields, until you arrive at Saint Hippolyte le Graveyron.
You'll know you've arrived when you see the mairie and the church …
but nothing else … believe it or not you're in the middle of the village
!
Don't
search for narrow houses built right up against each other, or a village
square with its café, fountains and games of pétanque... The houses in
St Hippolyte are scattered throughout the municipality, without any
real village centre. So enjoy the peace and quiet … and if you're looking
for activities, they're not far away. You're only 10 km from Carpentras
and 35 km from Avignon !
The
village was detached from Caromb during the Revolution, and is one of
the few not to be grouped or have any fortifications. The village is situated
on a plain just below the hill of Graveyron. You can explore this hill
thanks to three footpaths laid out by the municipality. If you like walking,
take one of these paths to get to the orientation table, and to lose yourself
for a while in the remarkable ancestral olive groves. |
