Situated in the east of the Department in the Sault
region, Monieux clings to the steep hillsides in the foothills of the "Gorges
de La Nesque". A small picturesque road leads you to the village. The
D1, also known as the "route de la Gabelle" is bordered by green
oaks and boxwoods, and although full of twists and turns, magnificent countryside
is revealed around every corner. To
cool off during the summer months, you can visit the lake which is highly
popular amongst local fishermen. In the village you will discover beautiful
old houses, several of which date back to the middle ages. A 12th century look-out tower dominates Monieux and links the village to
its historic past. Monieux is an excellent departure point from which to explore the Nesque gorges that lead to Villes sur Auzon, 20 kilometres away. You can either visit the depths of the gorges on foot (La Nesque is a small stream) or by car via the D942. ![]() More than 60,000 years ago, this canyon was home to the first inhabitants of the region. The remains of more than 32,000 bones have been found, together with more than 5000 flint tools... The Nesque gorges are impressive (even if they are not on the same scale as the Verdon grand canyon), and well worth a detour. |
