![]() Mérindol
is located in the Luberon
on the southern border of the Vaucluse
and the Bouches du Rhône. The village which
is 200 metres above sea-level can contemplate the vast plain of the Durance
right across to the gentle hills that hem in its southern limit.
Mérindol has remained up
to the present day the village that symbolises the repression of the
Waldensians. Though it was totally destroyed in 1545, the villagers
were able to miraculously escape slaughter by taking refuge in the mountains.
Over the centuries, the village perched on high known as the "the town"
was abandoned little by little in favour of "Les Bastides" just below
it, where the town is currently located. All that is left of the old
castrum are two wall sections. These small relics watch over the Waldensian
memorial. The headquarters of the Assocation for Waldensian and Historical
Studies of the Lubéron are located here. From this hill you will discover
a superb panoramic view of the Durance. In the village numerous buildings testify to its historical past. It is not rare to find chronograms from the 17th and 18th century on some facades here and beautiful country houses. Losing yourself in its narrow streets, you will come upon the church of Sainte Anne dating from the 17th century. It has a "Saracen dome" bell tower that is unique in the region, and has earned it a place on the additional inventory of historical monuments. The plain has long been the economic heart of Mérindol. Irrigated by the waters of the Durance, it produces an abundance of white and red fruit, the well-known melons and vegetables of the four seasons that can be found on the famous Cavaillon markets. |
