Entrechaux Entrechaux

Population : 877

Department : Vaucluse

7 km south-east of Vaison-la-Romaine via the D938 and D54, next to Mont Ventoux.

Bordering on the Drôme, Entrechaux, is situated at the confluent of the river Ouvèze and the river Toulourenc, on the "Intercallis" road of princes which marks the start of Haute Provence. Here you will discover nature at its purest, worthy of the most beautiful postcards of Provence
. Formerly a Celtic and then Roman village, and then placed under papal authority from 1274 to 1791 Entrechaux was a fief of the high courts of justice and is bound up in the eventful history of the Comtat Venaissin. Nowadays it is a peaceful little village whose main activity is the culture of: asparagus, cherries, melons, apricots and grapes.

Perched on a rocky outcrop at 280 metres above sea level, Entrechaux château clings majestically to the top part of the village. It is now privately owned, and each year the owner organises stone-cutting workshops as part of a restoration program. Numerous people participate to learn the techniques of yesteryear.

The village has grown out from the steep slopes of the château's site, and has developed around the secondary road that runs through the plain. If you ask any of the villagers the name of that street they will simply answer: "it's called the street, that's all". Don’t' look for street names here, there are none. But there is no risk of getting lost in this little village.
