Right in the heart of the Sainte Baume massif, at 700 metres altitude, Plan d'Aups is located in an exceptionally beautiful setting. The road bringing you to Plan d'Aups gives you vertiginous panoramic views of the valley of Sainte-Baume...it twists, and turns, and climbs ... but it's absolutely magnificent !
When you arrive at Plan d'Aups, you'll find yourself on a vast plain (hence the name Plan d'Aups) stretching to the feet of the high cliffs. Park next to the Sainte Baume eco-musuem, and then making sure you've put on some strong walking shoes, go off to discover the massif and state-owned forest. You'll find an astounding diversity of plants and discover the massif in a state of wonderment as you walk along the numerous waymarked paths that criss-cross the Sainte Baume.
Plan d'Aups possesses another treasure; the cave where Saint Mary Magdalen decided nearly 2,000 years ago to end her days in prayer. Today it is still a place of pilgrimage, where Dominican friars have been in charge of providing accommodation for the last 7 centuries.
The actual village of Plan d'Aups is located somewhat further on. Here you will discover a few houses dotted around, a fine church and a few hotels and restaurants that will welcome you for a good lunch or a night's stay to recharge your batteries in a wonderful natural environment, protected and far from urban agitation. |
