The little village of Mayons, pleasantly situated in the Maures forest is protected by the venerable Grandfather Chestnut Tree, planted in the Middle Ages.

When you arrive in the village forget about your car and take a walk down one of the numerous paths which start out from the village. This is siliceous Provence, land of pine trees, cork oaks and chestnut tree orchards.

You can climb up to one of the best view points in the area where in a moment you can change your view from the Mediterranean Sea to the Alps.

In Mayons, a number of producers make specialities based on honey and chestnuts to recipes handed down from generation to generation. And don't forget strawberries which are a veritable institution in the village. Eat as much as you like !

Places to visit :

There is only One monument in Mayons so ask the local residents to direct you to the Grandfather Chestnut Tree which is hundreds of years old. Moreover this will give you the opportunity to walk around the village streets and a foretaste of the forest. These are the heritage of the village which faces towards the Maures range of hills.

Don't miss :

The stars of Mayons are the producers of gastronomic specialities. Artists in food who know how to titillate your taste buds and protect the local gastronomic traditions. They produce all sorts of honeys, jams, or chestnut based products. And they have a high quality reputation because many of the top restaurants replenish their stocks from the village. If you want further information, write to us. Don't forget to enjoy a meal "chez" Michèle Aquadro at the Fouquette domain, which is the only farm accommodation in the Centre Var.

Take a walk :

For walkers among you, a sign posted path which leaves the village square takes you up the "Castel des Maures" (the route is indicated on a information panel in the square). This 1 1/2 hour walk taking you through the heart of cork oaks, chestnut trees and pine trees and is really worth it because at the summit there is a breathtaking view over the Maures plain and the neighbouring valleys. Pure pleasure. Other paths take you up to the ridge and the GR9 footpath (sea and mountain views). Further information from the town hall 04.94.60.00.93. (Please ! don't stray into the chestnut tree during harvest time.)

The less energetic among you can always take the Sheep's Cross path which starts from the end of the main street. When the tarmac runs out it's time to turn tracks and head back to the village.
