Gap - Charly Baile |
Between Provence
and Dauphiné, Gap is on the Route Napoléon linking Grenoble to the Mediterranean.
In the middle of an extraordinary natural environment of mountain landscapes
and nature parks, Gap benefits from a temperate Mediterranean climate due
to its altitude of 750 m.
In the winter you'll be able to enjoy the numerous
ski resorts in the surrounding area and in the summer you'll be able to
discover the sundial road, botany at the Domaine de Charance (3,000 species
of wild plants over 200 hectares of mountain pastures, rocks and forests).
There are roughly a hundred peaks over 3,000 m, and almost as many waterfalls
and mountain streams. The most unusual feature of the landscape is known
as Les Demoiselles Coiffées (the hatted young ladies): in the middle of
nowhere, an astonishing series of stone columns with a hat-shaped rock
formation on the top of each !

In the middle of Gap, as you wander around the renovated town centre,
you'll discover the history of what was once a fortified town, in the
Middle Ages. In the vast pedestrian area, after strolling along the shopping
streets, you'll come across the mayor's office and the 19th century cathedral.
The town museum invites you to take a journey in time. You'll see the
town of Autan as it was in 1550, as well as many of the cultural treasures
of the Hautes Alpes department.
