Eyragues

Population : 4,002

Department of the Bouches du Rhône

Between St Rémy de Provence (6km) and Avignon (15km) on the D571.

Eyragues is a peaceful, typically Provençal village not far from St Rémy de Provence. Ideally situated in the heart of the Alpilles, Eyragues is the perfect starting point from which to visit the most popular tourist attractions in Provence without having to drive very far. In less than an hour you can reach Baux de Provence, the Luberon, Avignon, Orange, le Pont du Gard, Arles, Les Saintes Maries and the Camargue. On the way to each of these places you will travel through wonderful countryside worthy of the prettiest picture post cards.

You cannot miss the vast village square, with its tall plane trees providing shade in the summer. Here beats the heart of Eyragues - people do their shopping and on Friday mornings the square is the site of the weekly market. All the locals gather here, meet friends and acquaintances and enjoy a chat and the chance to catch up on the latest news. The older people while away the time sitting on benches and talking, while the children play around the fountain.

On public holidays the square teems with life, the terraces are even more noisy than usual and the atmosphere is lively and cheerful. Every year during the Whitsun weekend, bulls, horses and cowherds gather for a three-day festival with bull courses, abrivado, bandido and encierro de taureaux (bulls are released into the streets, flanked by the cowherds). At the end of August, during the festival of St Symphorien, there is a whole week of courses camarguaises, abrivado, a show, a ball, boules competitions and
bicycle races.
