Sospel
is a peaceful village located very near the Italian border, to the south
of Mercantour
National Park, in the heart of the green valley
of Bévera. Its population triples in the summer season.
Starting in the 5th century, Sospel was an Episcopal city and for a long period an important staging post on the royal road from Nice to Turin, also known as the salt mule road. Travellers crossed the Bévéra here, taking a toll bridge built in the 13th century. This old bridge still exists. It was partially rebuilt after the second world war and currently houses the tourist office.
For those who prefer to stay in the village itself, summer sees a range of events : exhibitions antiques and flea markets, craft fairs, lace fair and even a scarecrow competition! |
Cathedral of St Michel (18th century) with Romanesque bell tower. |
