At
the border of the Hautes Alpes "département", Gigors
is a very small village (39 inhabitants!) where you will find complete
tranquillity in a marvellous protected environment consisting of high
wooded hills.
Although unspoilt nature is the real star, a little visit
to the village will not disappoint you :a clean and tidy square with its
wooden benches, under the shade of lime trees, a pretty fountain and a
fine old church
with a wall-belfry, some smart houses with blue shutters, a barn full
of wood for the winter, a villa plus swimming pool, and finally, to bring
the show to an end, two remnants of Gigors' past, not to be missed: a
plaster millstone, such as were made as early as the Roman era, and a
fountain in five sections, carved out of stone and dated 1829. It is said
the villagers bought this fountain from the local Lord by paying for it
with its weight in wheat! |
